New Survey Reveals What New York Cannabis Consumers Really Care About: Price and Effects
Data Offers Insight on Purchasing Priorities, Trust Levels, and Product Category Preferences in New York’s Licensed Cannabis Market
Jaunty, a GMP-certified 100% New York company working in cannabis and hemp extraction since 2017, releases the results of a representative survey of New Yorkers who consume cannabis, revealing the reasons behind purchasing decisions, product category preferences, consumer knowledge and consumer confidence.
Key findings include:
-
- 60% of respondents are frequent cannabis users, consuming multiple times per week
-
- When it comes to purchasing decisions, more than a quarter of respondents (28%) said ‘Price’ is the leading factor in their cannabis purchasing decisions, followed closely by ‘Effects’ like sleep, energy, and mood (26.8%) and ‘Convenience’ (23%).
-
- In terms of product preferences, Edibles were the most popular product category, with more than 40% saying they consume edibles more than any other category; Vapes (21.8%) and Flower (17%) followed.
-
- When it comes to cannabis oil products, consumers prefer Distillate (23.6%) and Live Resin (19.4%), as opposed to Live Rosin (8.6 %)
“As a producer of cannabis oil products that aim to be affordable, functional and of course, high quality, this survey has been especially illuminating,” said Nicolas Guarino, CEO and Co-Founder of Jaunty, which makes the state’s best-selling vape brand (according to Headset data). “It’s clear that most New York consumers want economically priced, approachable options that taste great with predictable effects. These are reasonable purchasing goals and at Jaunty, we pride ourselves on fulfilling these.”

Jaunty is currently the only brand in New York State that sells all of the primary oil types available: distillate, live resin, and the ultra-premium live rosin coveted by a small but mighty contingent of connoisseurs. This summer, Jaunty is releasing its Live Resin Vapes in licensed dispensaries across New York featuring full-spectrum extractions of terpene-rich oil with robust flavors and authentic true-to-strain effects.
The survey also focused on consumer knowledge and their trust in products sold in licensed dispensaries. These results indicate a savvy and discerning consumer base, with more than 37% responding they are “very confident” that products sold in licensed dispensaries are thoroughly tested and contaminant-free, but the majority expressing at least some doubts in the cannabis purchased from New York’s licensed market.
Additional noteworthy results are:
-
- Nearly 1 in 3 consumers say that brands label their products in an unclear fashion or inconsistently
- Nearly 1 in 3 consumers say that brands label their products in an unclear fashion or inconsistently
- The majority reported understanding the difference between the three main cannabis oil types (distillate, live resin and live rosin)
“New York is home to some of the most knowledgeable and astute consumer bases around, and cannabis consumers are no different,” added Guarino. “This survey should show cannabis brands that our customers are doing the work and not just making surface level purchasing decisions. They are seeking seamless access to safe products that are affordable, clearly labeled and deliver on their desired effects.”
